Winner of the Main Event: Myles Garrett
Garrett posted a somewhat underwhelming stat line in Saturday’s tussle with UCLA T Conor McDermott. Garrett tallied 1 sack and 3 tackles (one for loss) and added a couple of QB pressures at Kyle Field Saturday. What was more impressive was how obvious and apparent it was that UCLA game-planned around Garrett to protect their QB.
Garrett was directly responsible for two game-changing plays that will not show up in the box score. One play came at around the 8:40 mark in the first quarter. Myles stunted inside and McDermott followed him all the way inside allowing a blitzer to come free off the right side of the defense forcing an errant Josh Rosen interception. Another similar play with a similar result happened later in the first with about 4:00 minutes on the clock. Garrett bullied McDermott into the backfield and forced the back (whose responsibility was to pick up a blitz off the edge) to engage. The play resulted in a sack.
UCLA rarely ran directly to Garrett’s side, often called plays with Rosen to roll to his right away from Garrett, and had backs and TEs chip Myles when possible to slow him down. It is easy to key on Garrett who wins exclusively on his athleticism and competitiveness as A&M lines him up at the RE spot every play and doesn’t need to move him around to exploit mismatches. When you are that good every T he lines up against is a mismatch.
McDermott still looks the part and even won his fair share of 1v1 battles Saturday. While McDermott looks like a OT worthy of being drafted on day 1 or day 2, Garrett looks like the number 1 prospect in the country.
